源自古老的南方隱者文化，謎樣的老子向世人宣講玄之又玄的本源大道。相較於儒家試圖重振禮教階序以對抗亂世，老子的本源大道則包容萬物。如果萬物沒有優劣差等之分，就無須偏好厭惡。沒有了偏好厭惡，自然不生出欲望和爭奪之心，進而獲得永恆平靜。這是特殊世局下的帝王之道，其價值緊密依附於老子所處的時代，一旦錯置了時空，不免淪落為反智、反文明的愚民治術。楊照將老子放回戰國亂世的歷史脈絡中，唯有如此才能釐清「無為」的真意，其實是悲天憫人的積極關懷。
