《霜痕》收录作者从1923年到1924年间的八篇小说。王统照的小说创作按时间划分，可分为三个阶段：早期、中期和后期。《霜痕》是早期作品。早期小说是有关“爱与美”的，表现了作者从开始追寻“爱与美”的理想到最终幻灭的过程，同时也体现了作者的人道主义和博爱思想。在此阶段，作者运用的写作方法主要是直觉，即这些早期小说是凭借自己一时的直觉而写的，但价值却非同一般，这些小说写出了作者自己内心深处的见解和想法及其他对现实生活真实的感觉。
