本书收录应修人的散文、童话和书信。应修人从1921年到1926年，他以自己大部分业余时间与精力，主持上海通信图书馆，为开展青年读书运动及图书馆事业的创新做出贡献。著有散文《上海通信图书馆与读书自由》。生命最后的两三年，因参加革命斗争，很少时间和力量从事文学创作，只有两篇描写江西革命根据地斗争生活的童话：《旗子的故事》、《金宝塔银宝塔》。
