據調查，在香港大約有9%至10%的人帶有乙肝病毒，即香港市民中約有60萬人攜帶乙肝病毒，其中約25%至40%的人將會在40歲至60歲前演變為肝癌或肝硬化。而另一方面，市民對乙型肝炎的認識卻十分淡薄。絕大多數人對乙肝病徵毫無認識，甚至許多已經感染了已肝病毒的患者對自己的病情卻毫不知情。此外，對乙感病毒的傳播途徑、危害性、以及預防和治療的措施，人們更是知之甚少。
