1931年9月18日晚，盘踞在中国东北的日本关东军按照精心策划的阴谋，炸毁沈阳柳条湖附近的南满铁路路轨，并嫁祸于中国军队。这就是所谓的"柳条湖事件"。日军以此为借口，突然向驻守在沈阳北大营的中国军队发动进攻。由于东北军执行"不抵抗政策"，当晚日军便攻占北大营，次日占领整个沈阳城。日军继续向辽宁、吉林和黑龙江的广大地区进攻，短短4个多月内，128万平方公里、相当于日本国土3.5倍的中国东北全部沦陷，这就是震惊中外的"九一八"事变。
